Understanding Leather Categories, NOT GRADES.

For years the furniture industry has misleadingly tried to represent leather by assigning grades to it.  For instance, company A assigns a grade of 25 to leather, company B assigns grade 90 to the same leather.  Which has a higher perceived value?  The 90 of course.  NOT TRUE.  To accurately represent leather, the term grade is wrong and I will explain why.  The leather we show in our store is all 100% top grain leather.  This means that the outer portion of a beef cow’s hide is used to produce the leather cover.  Nothing else, just leather.  All top grain leather has the same durability properties and you can’t assign a different durability rating to the outer most portion of a hide.  The proper term used to classify leather is “category”.  Category is a way of grouping similar hides together.  So all category 10 leathers are going to be similar in shape, consistency, feel, texture and natural graining marks.  Category 20’s will be grouped in a similar fashion.  Price is then assigned to the different categories.  The fact is all top grain category leathers are equal durability wise; the only difference could be the cost.

So the next time you are in the market for a leather sofa, recliner, power recline group, sectional and loveseat, you owe it to yourself to visit Leather and Wood Furniture.  You will see a difference.
